How do I enable or disable JavaScript in my browser?

Today, all browsers have JavaScript installed and enabled by default. Keep in mind that many features on webpages are JavaScript dependent and will not work properly when it is disabled. Additionally, JavaScript and Java are two completely different features of a browser. This document is for toggling JavaScript, not Java. To proceed, select your browser from the list below and follow the instructions.

Internet ExplorerInternet Explorer

  1. Open the Internet Explorer browser.
  2. Click Tools IE tools in the upper right-hand corner of the browser window.
  3. Select Internet Options from the drop-down menu that appears.
  4. Within Internet Options window, click the Security tab.
  5. In the Security tab, click Custom Level... button.
  6. Scroll down the list (close to the bottom) and locate Active Scripting. Select Disable, Enable, or Prompt to adjust your JavaScript settings.

Google ChromeGoogle Chrome

  1. Open the Chrome browser.
  2. Click Customize and control Google Chrome Chrome settings in the upper right-hand corner of the browser window.
  3. Select Settings from the drop-down menu that appears..
  4. At the bottom of Settings window, click Show advanced settings...
  5. In the Privacy section, click the Content settings... button.
  6. Under the JavaScript section, choose the appropriate settings for your needs. You may enable, disable, or set specific rules under the Manage exceptions... button.
  7. Once you have made your changes, click Done.

FirefoxMozilla Firefox

  1. Open the Firefox browser.
  2. In the address bar, type about:config and press Enter.
  3. Click the I'll be careful, I promise button in the center of the screen.
  4. In the search bar, type javascript.enabled.
  5. Right-click the result named javascript.enabled located just below the search bar and select Toggle.
  6. JavaScript is now disabled. To re-enable it, repeat this exact process.

SafariSafari

  1. Open the Safari browser.
  2. Click Menu Safari menu in the upper right-hand corner of the browser window.
  3. Select Preferences... from the drop-down menu that appears.
  4. Click the Security tab and locate the Web content: section.
  5. The checkbox next to Enable JavaScript toggles whether or not it is on or off.

OperaOpera

  1. Open the Opera browser.
  2. Click Customize and control Opera Opera button in the upper left-hand corner of the browser window.
  3. Select Settings from the drop-down menu that appears.
  4. Click Websites in the settings window that appears.
  5. Under the JavaScript section, choose the appropriate settings for your needs. You may enable, disable, or set specific rules under the Manage exceptions... button.
